GROUP EXHIBITION

The Collaborative | The DMV Collects the DMV
October 26, 2024 - February 1, 2025.

The Kreeger Museum and The Washington Print Club are pleased to present The DMV Collects the DMV. "The DMV Collects the DMV celebrates the 60th anniversary of the Washington Print Club by presenting an encapsulated history of regional artists and institutions selected from members' collections. Forty-nine artists who lived or built their careers in the District-Maryland-Virginia (DMV) region are represented by works on paper, ranging from drawing, painting, and photography to print-making. This multigenerational assemblage of artists established and were supported by key educational institutions and print workshops. The Corcoran School of Art, Howard University, and Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) provided valuable training, employment, and art community cohesion for decades. No fewer than five important print workshops were established by artists included in the exhibition: The Workshop Inc. (Lou and Di Stovall), Pyramid Atlantic (Helen Frederick), Handprint Workshop International (HPWI was established by Dennis O'Neil, who taught at the Corcoran and printed the work of several artists in the exhibit), Lily Press (Susan Goldman), and Sol Print Studio (Soledad Salamé)." - Laura Roulet, Guest Curator, The Washington Print Club

This exhibition is presented under The Collaborative, a program developed by The Kreeger Museum in 2021 to support Washington-area artists.

SOLO EXHIBITION

Mary Early: Līnea XIII

A temporary, site-specific installation.
September 22 - October 27, 2024

Formerly WAS Gallery is pleased to present LĪNEA XIII, a solo exhibition featuring a new site-specific, vertical sculpture in beeswax by Washington, DC artist, Mary Early.

Līnea XIII is the thirteenth in an ongoing series of vertical linear works begun in 2017. Each work in the series results from the architectural demands or constraints of the space in which it is constructed. The current installation at Formerly WAS is guided by the scale and intimacy of an unusual space - a residential garage outfitted with white gallery walls.

On view by appointment through October 27, 2024.

To schedule a viewing or for additional information, contact Joumana Moukarim at formerlywas@gmail.com.

Tephra ICA Alloy Project

These dually authored artworks showcase the interaction between two distinct voices in contemporary art and are available as signed limited edition prints.

The Alloy Project, Tephra ICA's Annual Benefit offers new collaborative artworks for purchase and free arts experiences for audiences of all ages culminating in a ticketed evening Cocktail Event. This year, The Alloy Project invited five pairings of contemporary artists to engage in a process of creative response, generating five original collaborative works of art and a series of limited-edition prints. Like an alloy, these art works result from bringing together two distinct elements, creating new synergies and possibilities.

BEES
A BIG IDEA Project of the Sun Valley Museum of Art
April 13 - June 22, 2018

This BIG IDEA project explores the central role pollinators play in our food supply and our environment. It offers a community-wide conversation about the challenges bees and pollinators face today, from colony collapse disorder to shrinking habitat. One factor behind The Center’s decision to pursue a project on bees is the appeal the topic holds for contemporary artists working across the disciplines. The project presents work by visual artists, filmmakers and playwrights who have all chosen to illuminate the mysterious world of bees and other pollinators through their artistic practices, celebrating pollinators’ diversity and their contributions to our ecosystems.
The Center commissioned artist Mary Early to create a site-specific installation in its Project Room gallery. Working with beeswax, Early has used simple, repeating forms and shapes to create a geometric installation that hangs from the ceiling. Visitors are invited to move through the space, taking in the fragrance of beeswax as they experience the installation.

We Gave Our Best, Now the Rest is Up to the Hope Chest
A traveling exhibition: Vienna Edition

June 16 - 24, 2016
Opening Reception:Thursday, June 16, 2016, 7pm

Hope Chest: Traditionally in the form of a wooden trunk or box, contained the dowry of a young woman. The box and its content played an important part not only in the business transaction between two families, but served as a survival kit for the new life a girl was about to enter. The Hope Chest didn’t just contain the objects that would secure a young women’s future but comprised her heritage, her sense of belonging. With this in mind we produced a Hope Chest that traveled from the Old World to the New World and then back again. At each station a group of artist participated in shaping the content of the box and therefore the exhibition. With this gesture of sharing and hands-on participation we want to highlight the international intellectual exchange within the European – North American Art community, and therefore this exhibition series allows maximum visibility of this inspirational exchange. Includes works by Washington DC artists Zoë Charlton, Mary Early, Maggie Michael, José Ruiz and Dan Steinhilber.
